Translating texts in the field of art and culture might seem easier than technical manuals (and sure, for Alexandra, it is), but it does have its challenges. You have to understand not just the language, but also the nuances of cultural background. Then there is the terminology: each art form, whether installation or photography, has its own terms in each language. In addition, artists and cultural practitioners like to express themselves metaphorically and creatively; thus, just as in literary translation, the goal is to create the same aesthetic and emotional resonance in another language.
Art and culture have always been part of Alexandra Berlina’s specialization as a translator and interpreter: for many years, she has been interpreting at cultural events, translating and proofreading catalogs, press releases and exhibition materials for museums, galleries and foundations. Since 2021, she also translates subtitles for poetry videos, shorts, animated films, and TV programs; there have also been a few scripts, screenplays and film pitches. Alexandra translates art criticism, essays, biographies, interviews, and curatorial commentary for catalogs, exhibition materials, and press releases. Her translations in the field of visual arts and cinema include a few books: two monographs – one on aesthetics and evolutionary theory, the other on utopia in documentary film – translated from German into English, as well as three collections of works by artists translated from Russian into English. The works are very diverse; as a translator, Alexandra has experience with painting, sculpture, installations, photography and performance art. She also interprets at events such as jury meetings and award ceremonies.
Many museums and cultural institutes for which Alexandra translates into German and English combine art with work on socially significant topics such as queer history or colonization and empowerment.
