Living in Düsseldorf means living in the home city of ProWein, an international trade fair for wines and spirits, with the next ProWein (and ProSpirits) taking place from 16 to 18 March 2025. Winemakers from Moldova, Georgia and Ukraine often seek Russian-English and Russian-German translators for the wine fair, there are not being enough specialist interpreters with their native languages. Interpreting and translating at a wine fair, be it from the Russian or German, is quite special: wine vocabulary can be technical, what with viticulture, vinification processes, aging methods, and tasting descriptions. Besides, sensory descriptions are subjective and culturally influenced – and a translator at ProWein has to convey nuances about aromas, flavors, and mouthfeel! Depending on the client’s interests, a wine fair interpreter must come prepared with industry-specific knowledge about regions, appellations, regulations, and market trends. Finally, a translator at a wine fair is facing the challenge of maintaining professional clarity while surrounded by wine tastings, especially tricky when you translate from English into German and come across, say, a wine bottle labelling machine – to be translated as Weinflaschenetikettierungsmaschine.
